It is entirely possible that a 5.6-magnitude earthquake 270 miles away, near Pawnee, Oklahoma, was felt Saturday morning in Burleson and other areas of Johnson County.
"It is possible this earthquake could have been felt as far as 600 kilometers [373 miles] away from the epicenter," said Julie Dutton, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey center. "We find each earthquake to be different."
Burleson residents would not likely have been shaken from sleep by the earthquake, Dutton said, but could have felt a "small rumble or heard something." Some friends of the Burleson Star's social media accounts reported it Saturday morning.
The USGS received 77 reports from Johnson County residents of feeling some affect of the earthquake at about 7:02 a.m. Saturday. Fourty-one of those reports were recorded by Burleson residents. Additionally, there were 13 reports from Alvarado and seven reports from Joshua. Ten Crowley residents reported feeling the earthquake.
The tremors were at a depth of 2.8 miles, Dutton said.
"Whether it is felt has to do with where the epicenter of the earthquake is, the geological makeup and how the ground reacts," Dutton said. "This was an earthquake that was felt fairly extensively."
There are reports on the USGS site of the earthquake being felt as far south as San Antonio.
"We got reports of it being felt in Minneapolis, Minnesota," Dutton said. "So, it would be entirely possible to have been felt as far south as Burleson."
