As the World Series finally arrives, Burleson’s sales tax revenue continues to hit it out of the park.

The city received $130,614 more sales tax revenue in October than it did in the same month last year, according to figures released last week by State Comptroller Glenn Hegar.

Burleson was one of eight (of 10) Johnson County cities to receive an increase as Hegar sent Finance Director Rhett Clark $1,459,133, an increase of 9.83 percent more than the $1,328,519 the city received in October of last year, according to Hegar’s figures.

“We’re very happy about that,” Clark said. “It’s over our expectations. We’re now looking at being about $100,000 over our budget. If we make budget the next month of our fiscal year, we’ll be about $100,000 ahead for the year.”

For the calendar year, Burleson has received $15,227,501 in sales tax revenue, an increase of 8.27 percent more than the $14.1 million it received through October of 2017, Hegar’s report indicates.

The allocations are based on sales made in August by businesses that report tax monthly. The monies are counted in September and distributed in October.

The city budgeted $17 million from sales tax revenue, Clark said.

Burleson’s sales tax is 2 percent. The city receives half of that ($8,500,000 for the general fund) and the other half ($8,500,000) is shared by the Business 4A Economic Development Corporation (called Type A) and the Burleson Community Services Economic Development Corporation (called Type B).

County-wide for October, Alvarado is up 7 percent on revenue of $162,412 compared to $151,286 in October 2017. Briaroaks is up 9 percent on revenue of $1,678 compared to $1,545 in October of last year. Cleburne is in the positive by a healthy 30 percent on revenue of $1,105,645, versus $853,279 in October 2017. Godley is up a whopping 90 percent on sales tax revenue of $95,557, compared to $50,383 last October. Keene is ahead 5 percent on sales tax revenue of $74,653 compared to $71,469 in October 2017.

Rio Vista increased 11 percent with revenue of $12,172 compared to $10,982 last year, and Venus increased a strong 50 percent on revenue of $54,671 compared to $36,345 last October.
Grandview and Joshua were the only Johnson County cities to experience a decrease.

Grandview received $75,292, a drop of 21 percent from the $95,155 it received in October 2017. Joshua dropped 2 percent on sales tax revenue of $120,847 compared to the $123,918 it received in October of last year.

Statewide, Hegar announced he will send cities $474.6 million in local sales tax allocations for October, a 10 percent increase over October 2017, he said.
