The plight of the Burleson Animal Shelter is severe.
The shelter is currently at capacity with dogs of all ages and breeds available for adoption. Each kennel in the facility is full.
Two of the kennels house three puppies each and they have quite a story.
A jogger running near the baseball complex at Chisenhall Fields heard the puppies’ cries and discovered them in a cardboard box.
She brought the emaciated and flea-ridden pups to the shelter for care.
Luckily, the puppies are on the mend and will soon be ready for adoption and then head to their furever homes.
The shelter is also currently in need of monetary support.
They have an injured animal fund that helps the shelter pay for the medical care for any animal that has needs like the puppies.
Recently, the shelter saved the lives of six dogs that tested positive for heartworms. The cost to treat each dog was $600. The six dogs were saved and have been adopted out.
“Christmas was great, we were so blessed with supplies,” Animal Control Officer Penny Lehew said. “But every little bit helps. We really need monetary support at this time. You can even donate on our PayPal account online.”
The shelter would like to remind the community that you can have your pet microchipped quickly and easily at the shelter for $15. If you move you can also very easily update the chip. It can reunite these lost animals with their families and prevent future grief.
Last year, the shelter placed 719 animals in homes.
That is a 57 percent incease from 2017 and was a record-breaking number of adoptions for the shelter.
